爱荷华大学艺术与艺术史学院的新视觉艺术馆，为陶艺、雕塑、金属、摄影、版画创作及3D多媒体系所提供了126,000平方英尺的挑高空间，它同时也包括研究生工作室、教职工工作室和办公室以及展厅。

 

视觉艺术馆取代了1936年的原艺术大楼，该建筑因2008年6月洪水袭击爱荷华大学校园时严重受损。新建筑紧邻斯蒂文霍尔事务所于2006年建成的艺术与艺术史学院的西北角。

 

2006年落成的艺术与艺术史学院楼是个水平通透的平面结构，相对地视觉艺术馆为垂直多孔的体块构成，各系所间最大程度的互动这样的愿景可在公共社交场所空间中得以实现。

 

 

互联的艺术：水平功能划分，垂直多孔空间

在当今的艺术院校，互联与跨界是核心要素。如今的数字科技打开了那些各个艺术门类之间激增的互联性。垂直切割各层平面所形成的开放空间促进学院不同艺术系所的合作。学生们可以通过这些开放的区域看到进行中的活动并参与其中，透过紧邻内部流线的工作室玻璃隔断进一步的连结。

 

多重光源中心

自然光线与通风从“多重光源中心”被带入至建筑内部深处，七个垂直的切割开口有助于四个楼层间的活动交流。那些有玻璃的空间因每层楼面不同程度的移位而错落有致。这个几何结构创造了多重露台并提供户外会议空间和非正式的室外工作场所。

 

楼梯空间作为垂直社交中心，走廊为水平集会空间

楼梯的区域被用作为开会、互动和讨论的场地。一些楼梯会阶平台处有摆放桌椅，另一些则连接至开放的休息区，那儿设有沙发。

 

校园空间的定义与多孔性

原始的校园网格布局在爱荷华河处终止，如同撞击在石灰岩峭壁一样浑然天成。艺术与艺术史学院建筑以模糊的外缘呼应了这种不规则几何，而新馆以其简洁的平面重新定义校园的网格布局，使新的校园空间成为一片“艺术原野”。

 

材料共生，生态创新

可操作式门窗实现了自然通风。凹凸状的混凝土框架结构为外部提供热能，“气泡”似的楼板则供应辐射制冷与供暖。新馆的西南面与东南面采用德国Rheinzink公司的冲孔铝板作遮阳罩，其表皮会在自然氧化的作用下变成蓝绿色。
