Steven Holl: Half Earth is on view at Antonia Jannone Disegni di Architettura, Milan, now extended through July 28, 2023.
Steven Holl remarks on the ink wash series, displayed for the first time in this exhibition: “This series started in my watercolor hut 20 years ago as smaller experiments in Sumi ink painted over spring fed water from Round Lake in Rhinebeck. Later, as I wanted to stay black and white and near zero form but arrive at human scale, I made them larger. I used thin tracing paper as it has a more unpredictable blurring bleed across the intuitive ink marks. Vertically proportioned, these are beautifully framed by Antonia Janonne and scaled to the gallery wall with five equal empty spaces between them. This series stands silently like six characters. Luigi Pirandello’s 1921 play ‘Six Characters in Search of an Author’ comes to mind, regarding the problem of identity.” – Steven Holl
