Steven Holl Architects and Spirit of Space present a new, short film featuring the Winter Visual Arts Center at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, PA.
Since the building’s completion in 2020, the Winter Visual Arts Center has become a hub for creative life at Franklin & Marshall College. In addition to housing the Art, Art History, and Film Departments, the center connects communities on and off campus through art exhibitions, screenings, events, and flexible gatherings.
“What we intended this space for was a place for self-expression and self-discovery, but I think it’s actually fulfilling an even higher function, which is that it gives us a place for fun, for play, and also really a place for hope, for aspiration,” F&M President Barbara Altmann said. “There is nothing constraining about this building. It opens our thinking and our creative process.”
Steven Holl Architects and Spirit of Space have collaborated on films together since 2012. Spirit of Space creates films that study and exhibit contemporary buildings, landscapes, and art. Their films are a platform to share how space impacts lives every day, encourage active public discourse beyond the profession, and preserve the design process for history.
