Robert Irwin (1928-2023): A Personal Reflection

The amazing artist Robert Irwin departed our world yesterday at 95 years old. My first encounter with Irwin’s work was designing a room for his 1967 “Disc” casting shadows in the Stretto House, 1990.

We worked together over several months in 2014 on a major piece (unrealized) he made for the landscape of The Reach, Kennedy Center.

Over dinners, we shared stories of growing up on the west coast and our hot rods of youth with surfing decals.

We shared a commitment to the experiential and what art and architecture can provoke… deeper feelings of spaces inwards… the fog burning off.

His air-clock gone, but the ideas… timeless.
