SPACE T2

Space T2 is a seven hundred and fifty sf study of light and space sited on twenty-eight acres of forest in Rhinebeck, New York. A 1959 hunting shack is transformed by additions of seven Light Turrets. Four cubic skylights thrust upward, two cubic bays thrust outward and an east facing light catcher forms the entry. The wooden building is sheathed in tar paper with wood battens and has a white painted plywood interior.

NOTE: Historically turrets—from the Italian torreta (little tower) and the Latin turris—were used to provide a protective defense position. Here, where a hunting shack is transformed, guns do not shoot out; light shoots reversing the hunting shack’s program.

The space is extended and due to its ‘T’ shape, can never be seen all of it at once (a design similar to 2010’s ‘T’ Space Gallery). An abstract interior volumetric composition, the space peers out into the forested landscape through bulging window bays which can be occupied.

There is no heating, plumbing, or program of functions… Space T2 is aimed at human emotion, light as an alternative force, and preservation of natural landscape.
