Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. 2017
PROGRAM: 320-meter-high office tower
SIZE: 1,165,800 sq ft
STATUS: Competition
Our design is unique in many ways: it uses state of the art photovoltaics to power more than 50% of the energy demand, it propels a historic cultural connection of polychrome architecture in China into the 21st century, and due to the unique partial diagrid structure merged with these visionary ideas it is a tower of great economy, saving 15% of structural steel costs and providing fewer columns for flexible floor plans.
The 320m tower radiates a very special presence in this new CBD zone via its planar polychrome concept. Its floating planes of colored glass are embedded with state of the art PV, allowing the occupants to see through the PV screened glass. LED light embedded in the stainless steel pivots allow a dramatic polychrome variation in the elevations at night.
The geometry of the planes allows green terraces at several places in all tower elevation. These green terraces hide from view the necessary HVAC prilles at midpoints in the tower.
The joyful image of this new Polychrome Planar Tower draws the public in to a special green terrace on top the podium with cafes and seating and to a public observation terrace at the top of the tower.
The tower has the unique potential of becoming a local and international example of sustainanility design as a carbon neutral super high-rise, by the implementation of the PV-Integrated Polychrome Planar concepts along with Transsolar Engineering’s Sustainability recommendations.
With efficiency and integration, the overall planar geometry aligns with the diagonal steel of the composite structure. At 320m high, the diagonal bracing needed has a polychrome planar reading.
The section as the main spring of the works; is consistent with the skyscraper being many times more powerful in sections than in plan.
Here the ideal of the floating planes of polychrome is aligned with an ascending diagonal steel structure whose tree-like section gets thicker toward the base. While the core is concrete, the concrete filled steel section of the partial diagrid framework is exposed and painted silver-blue, giving a special character of strength to the interiors where desired.
