Watch the Full-length “Architectural Archive” Film by Spirit of Space

In 2025, The Steven Myron Holl Foundation + Steven Holl Architects hosted a premiere screening of a short film about the Architectural Archive and Research Building by long-time collaborators, Spirit of Space. The film is now available online to view in full.

The film offers an intimate look into the Steven Myron Holl Foundation in Rhinebeck—an evolving center for art, architecture, and ecology. Dedicated to advancing cultural dialogue through exhibitions, publications, and residencies, the Foundation preserves and activates an extensive archive of physical models, drawings, and daily watercolors. Spanning five decades, this archive documents the creative process while continually reimagining architecture as a dynamic conversation between past, present, and future.

Narrated by Steven Holl, FAIA, the film presents six works from the archive alongside footage of their built counterparts, filmed by Spirit of Space over two decades. Board members also share the mission of the Foundation as a nonprofit arts organization.

Set within a net-zero building that embodies the Foundation’s ecological ethos, the archive is a living laboratory where architecture, philosophy, art, and community converge.

Spirit of Space creates films that study and exhibit contemporary buildings, landscapes, and art. Steven Holl and Spirit of Space have collaborated on films since 2012.
