Steven Holl Architects will lead the architectural design for the renewal of Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago. Prominently located along the Midway Plaisance, the building has served the University for more than a century. The project will preserve the hall’s historic character while strengthening its role as a welcoming destination for students, alumni, and visitors.
Supported by a $50 million gift from David M. Rubenstein, chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, the work will modernize the building’s infrastructure, improve accessibility, and create new spaces for programs, events, and informal gathering. New architectural elements and the expanded set of activities and programs will be known as David M. Rubenstein Commons.
The commission brings together two longstanding areas of Steven Holl Architects’ practice: working with historic buildings and established campus settings, and designing spaces for learning, culture, and community. Representative projects include Higgins Hall at Pratt Institute, the Reid Building at the Glasgow School of Art, the Lewis Arts Complex at Princeton University, and the Student Performing Arts Center at the University of Pennsylvania, currently under construction.
The project team also includes JLK Architects as historic preservation architect and Workshop Architects for student-life programming and campus operations planning.
