“ONE TWO FIVE” Opens at Galleria Antonia Jannone

Milan, Italy, April 17, 2018 – ONE TWO FIVE will open tomorrow, April 18 at Galleria Antonia Jannone. The exhibition, curated by Marco Sammicheli, runs from the start of Milan Design Week to June 3, 2018. The exhibition is dedicated to Steven Holl’s design identity and his distinctive watercolors and features original watercolors dating back to the 1980s, carpet prototypes for Maggie's Centre Barts, Holl's 'A' Chair, and a new sculpture with corresponding watercolors.
The name of the show references the formal studies of Michelangelo and Picasso, who influenced Holl's new work; the location of the gallery: Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, 125; and Holl's daughter, who is learning how to count.
The new sculptures “one two five” are cut from 21 million year old Lecce stone by Pimar Italian Limestone. The two sections of five parts reflect on the two basic types of sculpture; subtractive and additive. Space between is the focus.
Several large watercolors on view are from the 1986 Porta Vittoria projects and the 1989 Paris Tolbiac Competition. A selection of watercolors created in the last decade includes work from the expansion of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA; and the Lewis Arts Complex at Princeton, University.
The exhibition also includes watercolors of carpet designs and prototype mockups for Maggie’s Centre Barts. Located in central London, the cancer care center opened December 2017. The carpets were developed in collaboration with Milan-based CC Tapis.
A limited number of signed 'A' Chairs will be available at the gallery. The ‘A’ Chair was designed in 1980 for the exhibition of the Pamphlet Architecture Reading Room, “Exhibit A” in New York. “Exhibit A” included chairs and pamphlets by Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Mark Mack, Jim Jennings, Lars Lerup, Mike Metz, Livio Dimitriu, Anthony Pellecchia, Lebbeus Woods, Lawrence Rouch, William Stout, and James Holl. Designed as a corner chair, the ‘A’ Chair transforms to a tower in a group of four back-to-back, or to a public square in a group of four facing each other.
The gallery will hold extended hours, 11 to 8, from April 18 to 20. Learn more about the exhibition and Galleria Anotina Jannone here.
