Harry Belafonte died yesterday at 96 years old. He was a major iconic figure in my life. When I was 10, my dad, my brother James and I used to sing along with the “Banana Boat” song. We loved his music and played it driving around Puget Sound. The Holl family loved his 1957 movie “Island in the Sun,” watching that in Bremerton, Washington. I remember when Bob Dylan played harmonica for him on the 1962 Midnight Special. We followed his support of Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. He was larger than life in song and soul.
