Maggies Centre Barts’ is shaping up with the first of three vessels, the concrete structure, entirely exposed. Historic West Smithfield will soon have a calming collective support space for cancer patients, survivors and their families and friends.
The structure will be clad in an exterior vessel of translucent white insulated glass with colored glass fragments referencing neume notation, the musical language of Gregorian chants of the 13th century. The interior will express a warm and open space, with a bamboo interior delineating spaces for meeting, study, and relaxation and diffused colored natural light will emit a joyful glow inside.
A ceremonial topping out for the building is scheduled in May.
