May 2022 marks the centenary of composer Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). “Architectonics of Music,” Steven Holl and Dimitra Tsachrelia’s Columbia GSAPP studio, departed from the music of Xenakis in 2017 and 2013. Co-taught with composer Raphael Mostel, the students translated music excerpts into space, material, and form, then proposed experimental designs.
“Music, like architecture, is an immersive experience–it surrounds you. One can turn away from a painting or a work of sculpture, while music and architecture engulf the body in space.” – Steven Holl
